Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. I'm on an HP laptop which originally came with Windows Vista.
At some point a while back, I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium for the laptop and now use that instead. However, my memory is extremely poor and to be honest I can't even remember how I installed Windows I only know this: I do not have a physical installation disc for the OS.
Now, my computer's been acting up as of late and I really just want to wipe it clean and start fresh. Thanks for your prompt response! My HP laptop Notebook, purchased with Windows 10 would not reboot after about two months of use.
As they were not available online, it looked like an HP scam, perhaps with HP even causing the reboot-problem in the first place by sending some simple crash-command into the computer. Maybe my imagination was running away, but you need to try the following because it worked on my computer, yet I cannot find this fix anywhere from any HP help-page, as if HP is hiding it.
Start the computer. Tap the Escape button a few times as it starts until options appear. Choose the F11 option, and voila! If HP has this easy fix built into the computer, why does it tell the owner that recovery discs are needed??? If HP did not provide this easy fix for any other computer refusing to boot-up, why not?
Google on how to do it, or ask your local store. Is HP really that dumb, or did it deliberately leave the information out? So, in effect, HP can get free employees by pre-building booby traps in its computers. This could be the way of the future for corrupt computer companies. It took a lot of time to find the fix, and hours more to recover files, etc. If your computer originally came with Windows XP or earlier, press F10 to enter recovery instead of F To put it another way, most owners with crashed computers are not likely supposed to find that quote online, but are supposed to get tech help.
HP techies were even going to charge me to tell me how to get the updates from loading whenever they wanted takes a couple of hours rather than when I want the updates to load. I slammed the phone and started looking for a sledge hammer to smash the HP computer.
It might happen some day. At the same time exactly to the day or half-week that the computer crashed, Indians in the Orient called me up several times from 1 , an HP number, I assume in a known scam to fix the virus on my computer. The problem is that if the hard drive is damaged, you might not be able to run the recovery.
If you perform a system image backup when you purchase the machine, you will have be able to restore it to factory conditions from that backup. Now that laptops are coming without optical drives, performing on the bare bones system backup right away might be the only way to be able restore your system to factory state.
Sorry for another post if Leo finds me taking too much space. The HP Recovery Manager program…can be used to recover the operating system from files stored in a partition on the hard drive without needing recovery discs. Okay, so HP gave their computers an inside, easy fix for a Windows-crash situation, yet, way over in , more than a decade after , when my computer crashed, there was no option flashed on the brain-dead, Windowless HP screen aside from the need to get recovery disks.
I could not find them online even though some HP page, perhaps nicely hidden in the jungle, offered them for a free download. HP likes to create headaches for its customers, apparently. I have tried many things but it did not work. It is Windows 8. I would boot from a Windows 8. See if those can fix it. Comments violating those rules will be removed.

Become a Patron of Ask Leo! I used to recommend that when purchasing a new computer, you try to get installation media.
In Windows 10, you can make installation media for your system yourself. How To Create a Windows 10 Recovery Drive has step-by-step details, but I want to call out one important selection along the way. Save that somewhere safe. That backup image takes the place of installation media in the case of system failure.
If you ever need to reinstall from scratch, restore this backup image instead, and your machine will be exactly as it was when you took that backup. You can download a generic retail copy of Windows 10 installation media directly from Microsoft. Where Can I Download Windows? Sometimes these are often not quite legitimate, and may not activate. Each OEM copy is tailored to the computer manufacturer that originally sold it.
If you have a computer from a different manufacturer, the disc may not work. No list of solutions would be complete without mentioning the possibility that you abandon Windows and move to Linux. Linux distributions are free to download and install. Should I Convert to Linux?

In many cases, that might exactly what you want. In most cases, none of those bells and whistles are useful and just get in the way. If you have Windows 10 you can also just reset your computer which effectively re installs the Operating system with defaults. Apparently with the latest iteration of Win 10 you can cloud install.
I had an SSD failure last week. Unfortunately my restore disk was way old and improperly done so I was out of luck. When prompted, I entered my license from Windows 7. Install went perfect.
Very good article to Re-Install windows. I have been lucky with system failures and managed to re-install. I am staying-put with Windows 7. Why change something that meets my needs and demands. I was offered a free download of Windows 10 but did not take- up the offer. At the time, due to adverse opinions and reports decided to stay clear. A bit off-topic, but worthy of a comment. I drew a blank on pretty much everything. My point? First, never again [btw-I do backup].
