If a phone has been previously used, it can corrupt the non-volatile memory for VPN Phone usage. This corruption causes the phone's backlight when converted to VPN phones to stop working.
Please note that if converting a brand new phone to a VPN phone, this problem will not occur. At this time there is no fix that can be done in software because the corrupting software is any previously released firmware. There is a way to make the backlight work again and that is by clearing the non-volatile memory.
