This first edition is in good condition without jacket. Rubbing and sunning to the spine. Otherwise internally very good free from inscriptions, markings or wear to the pages. The Castle Hill Press edition was not based on copy-typescripts, but on Lawrence's manuscript. There, this is unquestionably a presentation inscription, referring to the gift of the manuscript as a physical object.
Had Lawrence intended it as a literary dedication, he would have written it on a leaf after the title page, whereas it is written inside the front cover of the notebook in which he had copied out the text as a gift to Garnett.
