Norton and Kaspersky blocked and identified every single exploit. The firewall is a nice bonus, and does a decent job. It's just not comparable with the best full-service firewalls. Dismal Spam Protection eScan's antispam component offers an intricate collection of settings and features. It includes five different choices for how messages get marked as spam.
It can automatically e-mail a warning reply when it detects a virus. It filters mail using learning techniques and real-time blacklists.
The spam filter keeps data about spam and "ham" valid mail messages for detailed review. Sadly, none of this matters, because its performance is abysmal. To start, it seriously slowed downloading of mail. With no spam filter present my test system averaged less than nine minutes to download a thousand messages. With eScan filtering mail that same thousand messages took almost seven times as long—nearly an hour. That's a slowdown you'd notice. Many current products manage to filter out spam without affecting the download time at all.
One might forgive the slowdown if eScan used that time to do a phenomenally accurate job of spam recognition. It doesn't. In real-world testing, with over 9, fairly recent messages, the spam filter filed over a quarter of the valid messages from individuals as spam. As for valid bulk mail, newsletters and such, it marked all but 0. Despite mis-marking so many valid messages, it let 15 percent of undeniable spam into the Inbox. The only way these figures look anything but terrible is in comparison with eScan's scores from last year, when it marked 95 percent of valid mail as spam and slowed mail downloading speed by ten times rather than seven.
This elaborate spam filter is worse than useless. If you choose the eScan antivirus, leave spam filtering disabled and instead install the free Cloudmark DesktopOne Free, 5 stars. In testing, Cloudmark's community-based filtering blocked zero valid messages, personal or bulk, and let just 2.
I rather like the new main window. Too bad, the makeover is strictly skin deep. The fact that it includes firewall protection is nice; smarter firewall protection would be even nicer. I won't downgrade the whole product just because the spam filter is a dog.
It's a free bonus, after all. No budget for more? Either Panda Cloud Antivirus or Comodo would be a better choice, and both are free. More Antivirus reviews:. Good 3. As a bonus it comes with a decent firewall and a dreadful spam filter.
It's more effective at removing and blocking malware than last year's edition, but you can definitely do better. Pros Installation not balked by malware. Bootable Rescue CD available.

Be sure to run this in safe mode. By the time you extract hundreds of files to the Windows temp folder a favorite place for malware to be and accept the license terms, more sophisticated malware has a chance to catch it and stop it.
It shows both active and established connections. The default settings scanned our small VMware partition in just under 2 minutes. You can save or view the log file at this point and clear it anytime from the main window. Finally, a "Virus List" can view or generate from the main window. It seemed to freeze the app unless you wait, so it seems evident that eScanAV AntiVirus Toolkit uses a locally generated virus database to speed up scanning. We can't be sure how effective it is, but we can say that about all antivirus apps.
To clarify some confusion about the prior sentence, we have no way to effectively test against millions of infections, and new ones appear every day. Most of these tools can clean some that others can't. Hence, it's another scanner from a reputable company that might remove something your other tools can't and vice versa. Software languages.
